Happy Birthday Google : Google Turns 13 – Google history & key milestones
Happy B’day Google – 13th Birthday
In 1996, Larry and Sergey became Stanford computer science grad students, begin collaborating on a search engine called BackRub. BackRub operates on Stanford servers for more than a year—eventually taking up too much bandwidth to suit the university. In 1997, Larry and Sergey decide that the BackRub search engine needs a new name. After some brainstorming, they go with Google—a play on the word “googol,” a mathematical term for the number represented by the numeral 1 followed by 100 zeros. The use of the term reflects their mission to organize a seemingly infinite amount of information on the web.
Lets Have a look at the overall history of Google during 13 years.

Google announced its acquisition of Zagat – a big name consumer review service

Google to make Zagat “cornerstone” of local offering

Google just announced that it has acquired Zagat. This should be pretty huge for Place Pages.
Zagat is of course a big name consumer review service.
On the Official Google Blog, Marissa Mayer writes:
Moving forward, Zagat will be a cornerstone of our local offering—delighting people with their impressive array of reviews, ratings and insights, while enabling people everywhere to find extraordinary (and ordinary) experiences around the corner and around the world.
With Zagat, we gain a world-class team that has more experience in consumer based-surveys, recommendations and reviews than anyone else in the industry. Founded by Tim and Nina Zagat more than 32 years ago, Zagat has established a trusted and well-loved brand the world over, operating in 13 categories and more than 100 cities. The Zagats have demonstrated their ability to innovate and to do so with tremendous insight. Their surveys may be one of the earliest forms of UGC (user-generated content)—gathering restaurant recommendations from friends, computing and distributing ratings before the Internet as we know it today even existed. Their iconic pocket-sized guides with paragraphs summarizing and “snippeting” sentiment were “mobile” before “mobile” involved electronics. Today, Zagat provides people with a democratized, authentic and comprehensive view of where to eat, drink, stay, shop and play worldwide based on millions of reviews and ratings.
Future of local SEO market – Positive or Negative? : 6 Key Findings From The 2011 Local SEO Industry Survey
By Myles Anderson at SearchEngineLand
If you ask any local SEO what the nature of our industry is like, you’ll get a range of answers from ‘exciting‘ & ‘high-growth’ to ‘ever changing’, ‘full of opportunity’ and ‘challenging’.
The local online advertising market has seen strong growth over the last few years and this positive trend is expected to continue. Research group BIA/Kelsey forecasts that local online ad revenues will double between 2010 and 2015 to US$45 billion (US market only).
While SEO is distinctly different from online advertising, the objective for clients is the same. National and local businesses need to reach local consumers and the Internet has taken over from traditional local media as the primary channel for reaching their critical local markets.
